A Pick n Mix isn’t just a collection of sugary loveliness - it is the source of joy as you pick up your scoop and ponder over which sweets are going to make the cut, the subject of debate as you argue over which is THE best sweet to have and a real nostalgic reminder of childhood and happy memories.
So ‘Take Your Pick’ is a painting that is the same - it is about joy, about childhood and a nudge towards memories of sharing sweets with friends (and hoping that they didn't take one of your favourites!). I have fond memories of Pick n Mix even as an adult. When I first started teaching part-time, in my early 20s, I used to walk into Warrington town centre once a week to have a mooch and do my shopping - and every week I would treat myself to a Woolworth's Pick n Mix. It was all based on weight those days - which always went against me because I loved (and still love) the big cubes of fudge!
These days it's all about the size of cup you choose - so the challenge now is to cram as much in as you can!
This painting was a real challenge with all the different shapes, colours and textures but I absolutely love it - and here is the story in pictures of it coming to life...
